Early Life and Family Background Dorothy was a member of the notable Lawrence family of New York Her father was the fifth generation in direct descent to bear the name Effingham. She was educated at Miss Chapin’s School in New York City, and made her debut at the Hotel Pierre in 1927, reflecting the family’s established social standing.
Marriage and Personal Life Her first marriage, to George Robert Fitch in 1934, was a prominent society wedding. The reception was held at the Lawrence Homestead, the last family gathering at the historic house built by her ancestor in 1645. After their divorce, she married Blinn Sill Cushman in 1949, with whom she had one son, Andrew Lawrence Cushman.
Legacy Dorothy’s life bridged two eras of the Lawrence family’s social history, spanning the final years of the family’s occupation of its historic homestead and its transition into the modern period. She preserved the Lawrence name through her son’s middle name, ensuring continuity of the family identity into the next generation.
