Early Life and Education Effingham Lawrence, Jr. was born in New York in 1878, the only surviving child of Effingham and Janet Campbell (Mickle) Lawrence. He attended Swarthmore College for two years before leaving to enter the financial world in New York.
Career He began his career on Wall Street as a curb broker in 1901, purchased a seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1903, and became the head of the firm of Effingham Lawrence & Co. He dissolved the firm in 1916, subsequently joined the brokerage house of Taylor, Smith & Hard, and later re-established Effingham Lawrence & Co. His business address was 40 Wall Street.
Military Service In 1897 he enlisted in the New York Naval Militia and served aboard the U.S.S. Yankee during the Spanish–American War.
Personal Life and Affiliations Effingham Lawrence, Jr. was active in New York society and belonged to numerous clubs, among them the Union Club, Racquet and Tennis Club, Riding Club, Automobile Club, Down Town Association, and the Piping Rock Club. He was also a Mason and served as president of the Samaritan Home for the Aged at 440 East 48th Street. His residence for many years was at 375 Park Avenue.
Death He died in 1956. His widow, Dorothy Quincy (Gookin) Lawrence, survived him until 1969.
