Biography Gertrude Jerome was born in Brooklyn in 1853, the daughter of Thomas Atwater Jerome and Emma Vanderbilt, members of a well-connected New York family. She married James Henry Alexandre in the late 1870s and lived principally in New York City and at Shore Acres on Staten Island. Her short married life was marked by the births of two children: a daughter in 1879 and a son in 1883.

Her death occurred on 30 April 1883 in Manhattan, the day after the birth of her son. She was twenty-nine years old.
