Caldwell, Edward Holland (1844–1872)
Early Life
Edward Holland Caldwell was the son of James Henry Caldwell, an English-born actor and theater manager who became one of the leading figures in the cultural life of early New Orleans. His father had two sons, including Edward, by his mistress Margaret Abrams, and later secured their legitimacy through an act of the Louisiana legislature so that they might inherit his estate. Edward was educated at Spring Hill College in Mobile in 1856, though he did not complete his studies.
Career and Public Life
After a brief period in the jewelry business, Edward succeeded his late brother James Henry Caldwell Jr. as president of the Mobile Gas Light and Coke Company. He made his residence in Mobile, where he lived as a prosperous Southern gentleman. He was active in the Democratic Party and held several important offices in Mobile, exerting considerable local influence.
Religion and Affiliations
The Caldwells were generally Catholic, but Edward, following his father’s example, adhered to Protestantism. He was a prominent Mason, attaining the thirty-second degree in the Scottish Rite. His Masonic jewels are preserved as family heirlooms.
