Thomas Lawrence pursued both military and civic careers. At twenty-five, he was appointed captain of the Tartar, serving in the French war, demonstrating early leadership and maritime skill. After his military service, he settled on a farm overlooking Flushing Bay, where he managed agricultural operations while maintaining an active role in the local community. In 1784, he was appointed a judge of Queens County, a position he held with distinction, overseeing legal matters in the growing community.
