Kennedy, David Stewart (1861–1919)

Parents: John Reid Kennedy (1821–1869) and Elizabeth Byrd (1829–1870). Married: Mary Beazell (1873–1936). Children: David Stewart Kennedy (1914–1978). Kinship: First cousin three times removed of the post–World War II Smith generation.
Early Life and Education David Stewart Kennedy was born February 15, 1861, in Youngstown, Ohio. He was educated at Poland Seminary, a preparatory school known for its strong classical curriculum and civic-minded ethos.
Career Kennedy entered the furnace business at Hazelton, Ohio, later moving to Struthers, Ohio, and then to the Isabella Furnace in Etna, Pennsylvania. He rose steadily through the iron and steel industry and eventually became superintendent of the structural mills of the Carnegie Steel Company at Homestead.
In addition to his industrial career, Kennedy held numerous business appointments. He was president of the Reno Brothers Paint Company, secretary-treasurer of the Homestead Realty Company, and a director of both the Monongahela Trust Company and the Homestead Lumber Company.
Public Service Kennedy was Burgess of Munhall, Pennsylvania, and served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for Allegheny County during the 1913 legislative session. He was active in civic reform and was serving as president of County Draft Board No. 7 of Homestead at the time of his death in 1919.
Religious and Community Involvement Kennedy was an elder in the United Presbyterian Church and known for his philanthropy in local education and church work. His leadership reflected the practical Presbyterian values of integrity and public service shared by many members of his extended family.
Death He died July 10, 1919, in Pulaski, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and was buried in Poland Riverside Cemetery, Poland, Mahoning County, Ohio.
Family Note His wife, Mary Beazell Kennedy, organized the Woman’s Suffrage Association of Homestead and Munhall with the assistance of Mrs. R. Templeton Smith (Eliza Jane Kennedy).
