Parents: Sir Willoughby Jones, 3rd Baronet (1820–1894) and Emily Taylor-Jones (1831–1917). Spouse: Madeline Long Fox (1862–1928). Children: Edward Lawrence Jones (1891–1949) and Violet Madeline Jones (1894– ). Kinship: Third cousin four times removed of the post–World War II Smith generation.

Education and Ordination Herbert Edward Jones was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was ordained in 1884 and began his ecclesiastical career as curate of St. Andrew’s, Westminster.

Clerical Career He subsequently held incumbencies at Knebworth, Petworth, and Hitchin. His administrative and pastoral abilities led to his appointment as Archdeacon of Chichester, and in 1914 he was consecrated Suffragan Bishop of Lewes, positions he held until his death in 1920.

Honors and Distinction Jones was notable as the first cleric to be created Doctor of Divinity at Cambridge without making the statutory declaration quae respuit respuo—that he “held and rejected what the Church of England holds and rejects.”

Death He died in 1920 while still serving as Bishop of Lewes.
