Hyde, François Tonetti (1932–2012)
Early Life
Born in New York City in 1932, François (“Francy”) was the youngest child of Bobby Hyde and Lydia Lawrence Tonetti. With his mother’s death and his father’s departure to California, Francy grew up under Mary Lawrence Tonetti’s roof at Snedens Landing, nurtured by the same combination of Tonetti artistry and Lawrence tradition as his siblings.
Career and Travels
Francy worked in shipping with Farrell Lines, traveling widely—including years in Kenya. His children remember his homecomings as magical, filled with photos, stories, and exotic gifts. Later he volunteered at the Saint-Gaudens Memorial in New Hampshire, reconnecting with his grandparents’ artistic world.
Character and Family Life
Niece’s recollections describe him as “magical and loving, warm and jovial,” never angry, always gentle. His marriages brought both joy and tragedy: his first wife Elizabeth Walden died young; his second wife Joyce Burnett shared later years with him. He was a devoted father, even as family hardships weighed heavily.
Later Years
Francy embodied the Hyde storyteller spirit, bridging Tonetti history and his own global adventures. His warmth left an indelible mark on his extended family.
