Early Life and Family Background William Effingham Lawrence was a member of the Bayside branch of the Lawrence family, descended from early Long Island settlers with longstanding commercial and marital ties to the Townsends. His first wife was his cousin, Caroline Augusta Lawrence, who died young in 1841. His second marriage to Rachel Augusta Mickle linked him to the New York City political world through her father, Andrew H. Mickle, a mid-nineteenth-century mayor.

Residences and Family Connections He lived principally in New York and Bayside, Queens, where the Lawrence family maintained deep roots. The family is represented in the Lawrence Cemetery at Bayside, where William, his first wife, and several of his children are buried. The youngest child, Louisa T. Lawrence, is recorded on the family monument as having died in Detroit in 1876.

Children and Generational Continuity His eldest son, Edward Newbold Lawrence, died in 1866 at Funchal, Madeira, a common destination for convalescence.
