Lawrence, Mary Anne (1854–1915)
Biography Mary Anne Lawrence was raised in Newtown, Queens, where her branch of the family had settled after leaving Cayuta Lake. Unlike many of her Lawrence relatives, who married within mercantile, professional, or socially prominent circles, she married John Burkhardt, a farmhand and widower with nine children. By doing so, she assumed immediate responsibility for a large stepfamily.
After the deaths of her parents, Mary Anne inherited the Lawrence home and surrounding property. At her death in 1915, her estate was valued at about $250,000 (roughly $8,000,000 in 2025). The Lawrence homestead was later torn down, and the land was divided into building lots, marking the end of that tangible piece of Lawrence family history in Newtown.
Context and Significance Mary Anne’s marriage stands out in the Lawrence family record, as it crossed a clear social and economic boundary. Her choice illustrates that, even within a lineage known for endogamous marriages and shared class expectations, individual paths diverged from the prevailing family pattern.
