Biography: John Burling Lawrence was born in 1817 into the Manhattanville branch of the Lawrence family. He pursued a medical career and graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York in 1851. He practiced medicine in New York City for several decades, appearing in professional directories and physicians’ registers through the mid-nineteenth century. He was part of the family circle that maintained commercial and social ties to Manhattanville and to the wider Lawrence and Schieffelin networks.

Dr. Lawrence should not be confused with another New York physician of the same name practicing in the same period. He died in 1887.
