Early Life Effingham Nicoll Lawrence was born in 1887, a member of the Lawrence family branch descended from the Manhattanville and Flushing lines. His upbringing reflected the social milieu of the Lawrences and the Spooners, families long established in New York.

Career Effingham Lawrence became known for his expertise in the rental and cooperative apartment market in New York City during the mid-twentieth century. He was associated with the real estate firm of Pease & Elliman, where he gained a reputation as an authority on apartment rentals and the increasingly important field of cooperative ownership.

He served on the East Side Rental Conditions Committee and sat on the board of directors of the Tenants-Owners Apartment Association of New York, contributing to policy discussions and tenant-owner relations during a transformative period in Manhattan residential real estate practices.

Later Life and Death Effingham Nicoll Lawrence died in 1963. His widow, Julia Harriman (Budd) Lawrence, survived him until 1981.
