Hyde Family
The Hydes are bound to the Lawrence family through the marriage of Robert McKee “Bobby” Hyde (1900–1969) and Lydia Lawrence Tonetti (1904–1943), a direct descendant of William Lawrence the Settler. This union linked old New York Quaker mercantile roots with the Tonetti artist colony at Snedens Landing on the Hudson. Their children—Susy, Angy, Joe, François—grew up between Snedens Landing and Martha’s Vineyard, then carried Lawrence–Tonetti traditions west to Santa Barbara, where Bobby Hyde founded the Mountain Drive bohemian enclave.
The Hyde story is thus one of transplantation and transformation: the steady civic Lawrence legacy and Tonetti artistry re-imagined in the California hills, where handcrafted houses, communal grape-stomps, and festivals echoed the ateliers of the Hudson Valley.
