Early Life and Education

James Henry Alexandre III was born in 1915, the eldest son of James Henry Alexandre Jr. and Anne Loomis. He was educated at the Pomfret School, Le Rosey in Switzerland, and Harvard University, where he continued to Harvard Law School. While at Harvard he was a member of the Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770 and the Iroquois Club.

Career

After graduation, Alexandre practiced law and later joined the firm of Fordyce and Alexandre, which represented several North Shore villages on Long Island. Earlier in his career he worked with American Cyanamid and the U.S. Synthetic Rubber Company. In 1947 he was one of a three-man legal delegation sent to the Philippines to help settle that country’s World War II claims, reflecting his growing reputation as a competent and internationally minded attorney.

Residences and Affiliations

His principal residence was Tuckaway in Huntington, Long Island, a home that reflected the family’s established position among the North Shore gentry. He was a member of the Piping Rock Club, the Harvard Club of New York, and the Pilgrims, a society promoting Anglo-American friendship.

Death

James Henry Alexandre III died in 1963. He was remembered for his legal acumen, cosmopolitan education, and public-spirited service during the postwar reconstruction era.
