Early Life and Education

Anthony “Tony” Joseph Alexandre was born in 1926, the son of Frederick Francis Alexandre and Regina Mathilde Saportas. He grew up on Long Island, where he formed friendships that lasted throughout his life. He attended the Canterbury School in Connecticut before enrolling at Princeton University, where he earned his degree.

Military Service

Following his graduation, Tony joined the U.S. Air Force and trained as a pilot, continuing a family tradition established by his older brother, Frederick “Freddy” Alexandre. His time in flight school proved momentous in another way: there he met the sister of his best friend, Louisa Gilbert, who would later become his wife. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War era, attaining the rank of Captain.

Marriage and Family Life

Tony and Louisa Gilbert married on September 15, 1956.

and settled in New Canaan, Connecticut, where they raised their three children—Christopher, Michael, and Catherine. The family was known for its closeness, and Tony’s good humor and sociable nature made him a beloved figure among relatives and friends alike.

Later Years in Beaufort

In 1995, Tony and Louisa moved to Beaufort, South Carolina, following two of Tony’s sisters, Patricia “Pat” Claiborne and Mathilde Zara. Together they opened Cravings by the Bay, a specialty foods store that became a local favorite. Over time, other members of the extended Alexandre family also relocated to Beaufort, creating a vibrant family enclave. Several large reunions were held there, including gatherings of more than one hundred Alexandre relatives.

Death

Anthony Joseph Alexandre died on October 7, 2021.
